A Brief History

Koprivnica was first mentioned in 1272 and was granted the status of a free royal town in 1356 by King Louis I of Hungary. During the 16th century, the city became an important fortress within the defence system against the Ottoman Empire and became part of the Military Frontier.

Remains of its Renaissance fortification system date back to this period, while the historic city centre still preserves the spirit of past centuries through its squares, parks and preserved buildings.
