Mat Pulse Ahead of the Balkan Championship: Over 1,000 Participants, 14 Nations, and 3,200 Overnight Stays

Koprivnica, September 26, 2026 – As final preparations wrap up inside the “Josip Samaržija – Bepo” School Sports Arena for the Balkan Wrestling Championship (U15, U17, and U20), Koprivnica firmly steps into the spotlight of the regional wrestling scene.

From September 29 to October 4, the city will welcome young athletes, coaches, referees, and official delegations from 14 nations. Behind these six days of intense competition stands an organizational endeavor whose scale extends far beyond the wrestling mats.

Nearly 800 young male and female wrestlers, around 950 members of national delegations, and over 1,000 people actively involved on a daily basis demonstrate the sheer magnitude of this event. The Organizing Committee, sector coordinators, and more than 50 volunteers have dedicated months of work to ensure every facet of the tournament—from accommodation, dining, and transit to competition management and media production—operates at the highest standard.

Yet behind the staggering numbers are the people: athletes pursuing podium finishes, coaches who guided them through rigorous preparation cycles, and international referees and officials ensuring fair play in every bout.

Homegrown Talent on the Mat: Lara Blažeković in Front of Her Home Crowd

One of the standout stories of this year’s Balkan Championship belongs to Lara Blažeković, a local competitor eager to perform in front of her home fans in Koprivnica. Lara already commands substantial international experience, highlighted by her European U17 Championship medal win earlier this year. Now, she faces an exciting new challenge: competing on a major international stage in her hometown.

“My preparations for the upcoming Balkan Championship here in Koprivnica began with a ranking tournament and an international training camp in Serbia. After that, I continued training with my home club, completing the final stretch of camp work at an intense international gathering in Poreč. We put in quality work throughout the entire preparation phase, and I believe I am arriving in peak form,” Blažeković states.

For the young Koprivnica native, stepping onto the mat at home carries exceptional meaning. The roar from the local stands is set to provide a decisive boost:

“Competing in my hometown before a domestic crowd is a matter of immense pride, but also added motivation to leave everything on the mat. It is a special feeling knowing that familiar faces—people who have followed my athletic journey from the start—will be in the stands. Their support will mean the world to me when the whistle blows.”

Blažeković is equally proud of the city’s role as host:

“I am confident the organization will be world-class and that every participant will leave impressed. For Koprivnica, this is an incredible opportunity to showcase its hospitality to the finest young wrestlers across the Balkans. I plan to give my all and embrace every second of competing in front of our crowd.”

The Coach’s Perspective: Tactics, Mentality, and Three Grueling Cycles

Few understand the weight of this moment better than Neven Žugaj, head coach of the Croatian U20 national team. For Žugaj, hosting a major international tournament on home soil represents both a distinct privilege and a high responsibility.

“The Balkan Championship in Koprivnica is vital for our program because a major international championship is taking place right here in Croatia, in front of our people. Having experienced countless tournaments as both athlete and coach, I know each carries unique significance, and this championship is no exception,” Žugaj explains.

For Croatian U20 squad members, this represents the premier stage to test their mettle against regional powerhouses:

“Our athletes have a prime stage to demonstrate their caliber against top-tier competition while acquiring the high-stakes mat time crucial for their long-term careers. The home crowd will play a key role, and I am certain that energy will drive them forward. We completed exhaustive preparation blocks, checked off every target, and I have complete faith in these boys to deliver strong results.”

Žugaj closed with an invitation to sports fans:

“I hope to see the arena packed with wrestling supporters, creating a true wrestling atmosphere to rally behind our national team.”

The Officiating Corner: Experience, Developing Referees, and Global Standards

While competitors and coaches map out match tactics, a dedicated team ensures every bout adheres strictly to United World Wrestling (UWW) international rules and regulations. A key figure overseeing the officiating corps is UWW Delegate Zvonko Očić, who will head the international refereeing delegation.

“Staging a competition of this magnitude is a great honor for the Croatian Wrestling Federation and the National Wrestling Referees Association. As the head of that association and a member of the World Wrestling Referees executive body, I am proud of the platform this event provides to pass decades of officiating expertise down to aspiring referees from Croatia and across the region,” Očić noted.

The refereeing delegation arrives in Koprivnica on September 27, kicking off technical clinics, seminars, and practical exams for international UWW license upgrades. Among those taking the floor is Koprivnica’s own Filip Verčević, who will sit for his international referee credentials during the tournament.
